Is there a difference other than cost? Should I pay the price and replace with Johnson parts or use CDI?

In this case it is the stator. No doubt, it is melted. I am replacing the stator, power pack and timing base. 1996 Johnson 225

Good question. I have no way of knowing what caused the failure however, prior to the first stator going out, I experienced intermitent loss of power. I tried replacing filters, plugs, fuel and nothing helped. I suspect i have had a problem with the power pack all along which caused the stator problem. Just a hunch.

Sounds like this isn't the first stator you had go bad, right? RJ is right on, you need to figure out what the root cause is. The folks at CDI are really on top of their game and can probably give you some things to look at.
