Looking for some good information on theory of CDI's. I did a search with Google but did really find anything that went into details. My Evinrude manual does offer much about the theory.
I know the basic theory but I am looking for a schematic of the CDI for my 9.9hp 4 stroke. There is a guy on another forum that is claiming that you need a battery capable of >70 amps or you will damage the CDI. I don't see how the battery will effect the CDI when it gets its power from the stator coil. I am currently on my 4th CDI in 7 years and trying to figure out why I am having such bad luck on a motor what is seldon used on a sailboat. Are CDI's typically this fragile ??

Re: CDI Tutorial ??

Hi Roehrle
Sorry I am not a very good electrroic's explainer. It does sound as if there was a miss comunication with the other person on the other board. True, with some of the eairlier battery powered CDI you needed to have a battery rated as such. How ever you are correct, that with the modern system you have the battery has nothing to do with ignition. The battery is used in the starting and charging systems. I have no idea why you keep needing so many cdi units. You may have a bad ground, connection, broken wire, etc. I have had problems in the past with wires either being skined or broken where they are clamped down under the stator. Good luck
