Re: ceased engine

What year 4hp is it? Model # is helpful to the real experts! I'd tell you a few tips but there's an old thread if you do a search called "awakening a sleeping engine" that's got better info than I could give you. If it's been stuck for a while you need to go ahead and pull the lower unit and replace the water pump impeller, check the lower unit oil for water, and I'd squirt a little WD-40 or something through the carb. before trying to crank it. Your carb is prob. going to need cleaning too. I'd check that impeller at least because over time they can rot and little pieces can work their way into the water jackets of the powerhead and stop them up when you crank it up. If it's newer than say 1980 then it is almost certainly a 50:1 gas/oil ratio. 50's and a lot of early 60's motors used 24/1.
Hope this was at least a little helpful,

Re: ceased engine

Renny1,
It should be on a metal tag on the side of the transom bracket. IF not, look under the cowl and find the round freeze plug on the side of the cylinder, it'll have a number on it you can use.

Re: ceased engine

So use 50:1 87 or 89 US Octane gasoline to TCW-3 100% synthetic oil for best results.

Re: ceased engine

All the 4's are 50:1 as they weren't made back in the 24:1 day.

Re: ceased engine

Personally, since it was stuck I'd pop off the bypass covers and take a look at the rings. Check the condition of the piston and see if the rings are just gunked up or rusted. Push on them to see if they have any spring to them, as well. I wouldn't trust any motor that was stuck without at least checking the piston and rings. But I'm not a trusting sort. Its a long way to paddle back to the launch and an embarassing venture at that.

That motor doesn't have a by-pass cover. There is an exhaust cover plate on the port side that can be removed to get a small view of the cylinders and rings. What I would do, however, is to pull the head also - its very easy to do and you will get a good view of what the cylinder walls look like.

Re: ceased engine

That motor has aluminum rods and bronze babbit bearings. The banging on the piston may have bent a rod or dimpled a bearing. I would procede with caution. If it were mine, I would disassemble the powerhead and inspect everything, clean the rings & grooves, and make sure the upper main bearing (only steel bearing in the motor) isn't rusted. I would also run the oil a little on the fat side, as the bronze bearing do much better with the extra cushion...
