Centered Hub Wheels

So I just acquired a home-built trailer to haul a really light 14ft jon boat - I drove the trailer about 400 miles to find out that the wheels have rusted through. I am now in the process of looking for new wheels but im in a pretty big bind as the only hub-centered wheels i can find are those such as the ones used in hand trucks and are for slower speeds (<20 mph)....

Does anyone know where (if possible) I can find hub-centered wheels rated for higher speeds???

Thanks, Ben

Are you saying it has a straight spindle like a small yard work trailor? Wheel barrow tires? plastic inserts and a grease zirk?

Re: Centered Hub Wheels

These wheels have the wheel itself and the hub as a single unit. There is no separate hub. The bearings are installed like a standard setup. These wheels are getting hard to find and my suggestion would be to replace them with a standard hub and wheel assembly. The issue however is going to be compatability with the current spindle. A ruler will help here. Measure the current spindle diameter where the inner and outer bearings sit. Measure the distance between the bearings, the diameter of the area where the seal rides and the distance from the seal surface to the end of the spindle. You now have the numbers needed to determine if a standard hub will fit the current spindle. If that is not possible, a replacement axle is inexpensive and you will then have a fully updated system for which parts are readily available.

Ayuh,... I agree with Silvertip,... Updating to a more current hub, 'n wheel system would be the Best Option,...

But, I believe I saw thosse wheels in the Northern Tool catalog I just got the other day...

I agree with these guys also. My Dad and I had a trailer with wheels like that on our little 14 ft. Sandusky. It got real messy if you needed to change a flat tire on the roadside.

Yeah, dump those wheels.
You might find a used trailer on Craigs List for 50 bucks. Change axles.

Re: Centered Hub Wheels

Changing axles would be a great idea and changing to a standard hub/wheel setup would be awesome except for one problem... there isn't an actual spindle/axle that connects the two. Whoever built the trailer must have been slightly retarded because the wheels come straight off the frame separately with coil springs. So buying an axle to go between the two would require welding and more money than i want to spend... I might be able to load some photos of the trailer later today or tomorrow...

but as of right now looks like im stuck with these hub centered wheels which is why im looking for some wheels with a better bearing system to handle higher speeds...

I bought "Tie Down" wheel hubs and then tires/rims to fit. 4.8x4, 4 lug with 4" center.

Tie down 81052, 1250#.

Fits on a 1" spindle.

Conversion works fine and cost me $130 or so.:)
