I have a 1984 Century BR 3000 and have not run it yet but the prior owner said it had trouble planing out. It has a 21" 19 pitch prop now that needs replacing. I am not sure if I should go for more speed or power. Anyone know what the stock prop is for this boat?

Okay..... I will move this thread to the Prop section for the best answer.

Normally, you need to know the wide open throttle RPMS and be certain everything else is right first.

Being a 1984 boat you also need to check the flotation for being water logged.

Yeah I know I need to get it in the water and check out the tach readings but I was wondering what prop they put on it at the factory. The floatation is fine, I replaced all the flooring.

Hopefully someone with a 228 Merc will chime in. I refuse to even guess. .......... we do have some real prop experts here and they will probably pop in............. or contact the manufacturer http://centuryboats.com/

Out of business....you could try A&A marine....run by former Century people....might be able to look it up...they don't sell props, but you might be able to get a recommendation.

Call...don't e-mail....you won't get a reply to e-mail.

I have the same boat and have not used it yet,, still doing a rehab, but the prior owner said the same thing. Mine has a 19 pitch Merc prop now,so I picked up a 21 pitch on Ebay to put on it. That should push the boat more and get it up and out. Watch the tach to make sure you don't over rev the engine... but I think the 21 pitch will do the trick. You said "21" 19 pitch?? WHAT? Don't you mean 14" 19 pitch?

going down in pitch will slow the boat down,,not speed it up. More power maybe but slower in the water! Pitch refers to how many inches forward the boat is moved in every revolution of the prop! 17 pitch is 17 inches per rev... 21 pitch is 21 inches per rev. He needs to get the boat UP AND OUT,,not DOWN AND IN.

A quicksilver(aluminum) 15 X 17 or a Solas Amita(aluminum) 14-4/5 X 17.

Either of these should put you at about 4600 rpm(range is 4200-4600), and produce better acceleration onto plane.

Top speed might be about 46-47 mph.
