Century Riviera 5 meter dilemma

I recently just had my starter lock up on me and chew up the teeth on the flywheel ring. I have pulled the engine, but cannot find a serial number for the exact model, but i am 95 percent sure its a mercury 470(aka 170). I talked to one dealer who said that i might as well junk the motor as getting a flywheel or ring gear is impossible, anyone have any advice as to what my best course of action is?

Measure the ID and OD of the ring gear itself, and count the teeth. Then check with NAPA and see if they have one that will fit.
The flywheels from Merc are NLA (No Longer Available).

Re: Century Riviera 5 meter dilemma

im trying to find a ring gear, but its posing to be quite a problem. Due to the serial number being unfindable on the engine block, im not sure of the exact motor. Ill post some pics, maybe you guys can help. and are there are good places to look for a ring gear?

On a side note too, I went to Napa and they matched the ring gear to an old ford motor. 157 teeth, 12" ID and something like 13.13 OD. It comes tuesday and was 25 bucks so we will see if it works.....

im enclosing some pics of my engine too

Re: Century Riviera 5 meter dilemma

If it says 170 on it, as you posted in your original post, then that is probably what it is.
It has the small 3" heat exchanger and the proper expansion tank/elbow for a 170.
The engine was a Mercruiser designed aluminum block using a Ford 460 head so I would guess it's not a long stretch that the crank and flywheel may also be Ford or Ford influenced.

The crank is different only because it only has four rod journals instead of the eight but the best I remember the flywheel is the same as the 460 ford.
