Am new to these boards and have read a lot of them. I just bought a 1990 Chaparral 2350 SX AQ 271 C with suspect exhaust manifolds that are original with ocean use. It is a Volvo-Penta 350 with dualprop, pretty sure it's a 290 outdrive. I read on a post that there are ceramic coated manifolds out there....who makes them if they exist, and how much longer do they last and how much more do they cost ? ..........I'm new to IO's and saltwater exhaust manifold use....this forum of vast knowledge is what I'm looking forward to

If you have a duoprop it is a 290. If your boat is a 1990 you should have already changed out the exhaust system, manifolds & risers. I have been a Volvo dealer a very long time. I would suggest using a Volvo manifold and riser. Have yours checked out by a good reliable repair shop. The key to all cooling systems is to flush the engine very often. Good Luck, Gene

Hobie<br />Sorry do not know much but am also interested. I do know that Mercury has made them but only saw in a boating mag. I feel this is biggest maintenance problem on stern drives and think the industry should have solved. Could be they do not want to slove as they make lots of money off the problem. Either the manifolds and risers or the engine. Funny it can not be solved but outboards do not have the problem.

Hobie- Merc makes them for some of their engines but none of our other manufacturers have caught on yet...they last a couple extra years and are only about $100 extra per manf/riser combined

Well, I'm really bummed that someone has not done this yet for other manifolds. Seems like there would a large market in the saltwater areas, even if they had to be special ordered. Thanks for the replies....perhaps I'll get a quart of JB Weld and coat the inside of my new ones ......it's worked for everything else... :D

They have addressed this problem Gil for one makes stainless exhaust manifolds and risers. There are other manufacturers as well but this the only one I can think of. Be prepared as they are expensive. One question how can you coat the inside of your manifolds with JB weld.

mikeblare, it was tongue-in-cheek for the JB Weld. Who else has the protective coatings of one sort or another for the manifolds besides Gil ? I read some of Gils stuff but wasn't sure if they offered it for a Volvo Penta 5.7 1990
