Cetol on teak - not curing

I'm using Cetol Natural Marine Teak on a new dash panel and it didn't cure after the first coat. I sanded the virgin teak then cleaned it with laquer thinner before using the Cetol. The initial coat hasn't cured after three days. The temp and humidity were fine. Any ideas?

I've never had that problem with Cetol. For me it's always dried to the touch in a few hours.
Did you stir the can thoroughly before application?

Honestly, no. I shook it up well (I thought). At first I was worried I didn't let the laquer thinner dry completely but that stuff evaporates pretty quickly.

Sounds odd.

Is there residue on the bottom of the pail? (related to mixing question)

Expiry date?

If its coming off don't try to recoat hoping for a better result. Take the product back and ask sellers opinion. (if they are reputable) Strip and start over. Sorry if that's obvious, but you never know. :)

I used a stirring stick the second time around and didn't notice any gunk on the bottom. Tried a second coat and it was much but after scraping them off, I realized the first coat never did cure. I'll continue to scrape and strip and start over. I bought it from West Marine here in town so I doubt it was expired.

There should be a date stamped on it...I'd check it.

I do lots of residential house painting and you never know what gets missed or set aside by these high volume sellers then put on a shelf.

It sucks 'backing up' on a job like that. :(

Sorry, not sure what else to suggest, you've checked the major factors:
-sanded
-cleaned
-humidity good
-temp good

It's not rocket science. If it's clean of no waxes or oils it should adhere.

Try a test on another piece of wood. If it doesn't adhere...take it back.

Will do.
Sikkens says not to thin it but I sure want to so it will flow out better.

I talked to Sikkens today. They said I was doing everything right. Told me to scuff it, wait a couple days, then apply another coat. They reccommended really thins coats. Duh!

very oily woods like that can take a while to dry completely when you are talking virgin wood. Old teak will take finish like just about any other wood will since most of the oils have leached out of it as far as it's going to through the years.

I've dealt with Brazillian Teak that took a good 2 weeks to be dry enough to work with, and even after that, certain boards were still questionable due to the way the grain of the wood was.

Try the finish on a different species of wood, like an old 2x4 and see if it dries...that will tell you if it's the finish or the wood.

I didn't have any issues like that when I used it. I didn't use laquer thinner though. I used teak restore instead. I waited 24hrs before applying each coat. I am assuming you are local to me with your user name. Humidity lately has been a bear. Don't forget to do at least 3 coats. I sanded with 220 after the first coat cured completely (waited a week) then no sanding after that.

Re: Cetol on teak - not curing

I'm experiencing the exact same thing. I'm making a table out of Irko and I did everything as per the instructions and it's going on to 48 hours and one would think I applied it an hour ago. I used this before to re-finish the Teak on my other boat and had no issues at all. In fact it dried an about 12 hours. But that was in the summer and in the garage. This is in the winter indoors in my kitchen.

I spoke to the Sikkens people and they said, this is almost word for word, "That because it is an outdoor product it is meant to be applied outdoors so that is why it is not curing quite as fast as it does normally" So the girl said her technical department suggested to take it out to the garage for 24 hours and it should cure. I said , but it's -20C and it's freeze before it does anything.
I've put a fan blowing over it to simulate what it would experience if it was applied outside, as she suggested, because outside there is always a breeze......hmmmmmmm
I'm just making sure I follow her instructions correctly, because she is the service desk rep.

I gave up on it. It's way too thick and not natural looking for my tastes. I ended up using mahogany and spar urethane and it looks great. I'm still waiting for my systems check gauge (the blank hole). The finish is a bit darker and richer looking in real life.
