I have recently acquired a small “homelite” chainsaw. It starts no problem, push choke back in and still no problem, it runs as it should for about 30 seconds and then dies. If started and left at idle speed after about 30 seconds it will stall if an attempt to accelerate it is made. If started and left alone it stalls by itself after about a minute. It gets harder to start after few attempts are made to keep it going.

Anyone have any suggestions.
thanks.

Re: chainsaw

Is this a new or old unit? If the saw is new I'd guess the carb is out of adjustment. If it is a used saw the first thing I'd try is clean the air filter and fill up with fresh gas. If that doesn't help the carb may still need adjusting. You might also have carbon built up in the exhaust port or the muffler which won't let the motor breathe.

This is an old saw, not sure exactly what vintage or its history.

You replied when I was editing. Somehow I posted after the first sentence the first time.

If the saw has been sitting for awhile the carb may need cleaning.

Re: chainsaw

Thanks Ken

The gas and air filter are good, I would not be surprised however if the carb is full of saw dust and will have a look at it over the weekend. I suspect there is not enough fuel being delivered? probably a clogged carb.

Gibletts. If you can, take a look at the fuel line comming from fuel to to carb. If saw is very old the fuel line may be hard and brittle. If there was a slight bend in the line over time when it get hard the bend will increase and cause a restriction. I would look into that before pulling the carb out..
Just my thought..
..D..

Re: chainsaw

Good point, The fuel line beyond the tank appears ok and full of fuel, Ive had a look at the filter on the end of the line thats sits in the bottom of the gas tank and thought at the time that part of the fuel line felt like it had partially collapsed.

If there is a partial blockage I thought I might expect to see maybe air bubbles being sucked back the other way?

thanks

Re: chainsaw

I loaned a perfectly good chainsaw to a boneheaded neighbor one time. When I got it back, it acted exactly like that. It turned out he had used a rusty old gas can to refuel it (the gas was new, the can was just full of rust particles). I have yet to tear the carb down and clean it up, but I'll get around to it one of these days.

-dd-
