FIRST hello to all, new to iboats. I have a 1996 30 hp evinrude, tiller, electric start, model E30TEEDE since it was new. While talking with an outboard tech. he advised against using NGK spark plugs in the smaller two strokes, because they burn too hot & could cause piston damage. The "book" calls for champion QL82C and the NGK conversion calls for BR7HS. THOUGHTS?
By the way I have to add that this motor has proven to be a dependable work horse, I use it to push a 16' aluminum boat 3 or 4 days a week from May till the first of Nov. Just a dependable motor.
THANKS, JOHN

100% run the Champs in her, that is what she was designed to run on.

I think the tech exaggerated the "danger" in running NGK plugs, but I agree that all OMCs were engineered for Champion plugs.

NGKs are just fine in many other applications but I would use only Champions in JohnnyRude.

I recall when NJK made the crossover for the J6C and J4C. The threaded shank was a little bit too long and the piston would always slam the gap shut. I guess the "engineers" at NJK never even saw a Champion plug. :D They have since corrected that problem and now they work fine.

I have used them interchangably, depending on what I have around, never had problems.
That said, I also try to use Jap plugs in Jap engines and American plugs in American, engines because that is how they were designed.

Yea, when I first discovered this issue, a fella brought a '54 Johnson QD by and told me that it didn't have any power and would die when he throttled it up. LOL I pulled the plugs and saw the gap was non-exhistant. I'm amazed that it would even run. I put a pair of J6C's in it and it ran like something bit it. He left happy. :)

Re: Champion or ngk plugs

A guy came over with a 'Rude 1954 lightwin 3 hp the other day, it needed the carb cleaned, and the coils replaced(cracked) and I put in new condensors and timed it as well. New plugs, and it ticks over perfectly now. But the real "gem" was in the box he got with spares from the owner, there were 4 NIB sets of Champion Marine spark plugs(red packaging) the coveted J6J plugs. He paid me for my work and gave me the plugs, which I have displayed on my peg board...vintage baby!

Right on. You probably remember my previous posts on the three Evinrude Larks I brought home a couple months back. Each of those still had the J4J plugs in them and still fired just fine. LOL Finding these old plugs still in the box, now that's classic. :D

Some of the OMC motors are more forgiving than others when it comes to combustion temps. Therefore you can run the (slightly) wrong heat range plug and there won't be any issues. However some OMC designs were very sensative to combustion temps and can result in a damaged piston. Fuel quality, octane and set up play a huge part in this scenario.

Re: Champion or ngk plugs

It is somewhat of a jungle. Those engines used to run on (Q)L77JC4, was later changed to QL82C which is a hotter plug. What exactly triggered the change I do not know. It might have been Champion, it might have been the tech's at BRP that discovered that the slightly hotter plugs combined with the new type of fuel might improve the idle a bit. As for the use of NGK, it may be used and are in quite some countries the only option as Champion are difficult to get. But stay away from anything marked 'R' in the specification when it comes to the Evinrude/Johnson engines.
