I have a chance to buy a 196x 6 hp johnson outboard. I asked what he wanted and this was the reply..<br />"I'm want to get $75 for the outboard, including a gas can and hose. The motor runs, but stalls. Prior to that happening, it ran fine. I had Richardson's Boat Yard work on it, but all they did was a tune, they didn't really searhc out the problme. I've been told that it should be easy to fix. (So, its got new plugs.etc.) BTW, It's something like a 1963. As I'm sure you know, a 6 HP goes for over $1,000."<br />From what i read here, im thinking it shouldnt be too tough to repair.. I will give it a compression test and offer maybe 50 bucks?.. ANy opinions? thanks..

Re: chance to buy..

If the compression check turns out and the lower unit oil is free of water, it's a steal at $75. Parts are cheap and those outboards are easy to work on, so if you've got some mechanical inclination it could be a very worthwhile project.<br />The only concern I have is that the engine runs then stalls. That could be because of a number of factors, but one of them is overheating. If the engine was repeatedly overheated, it's likely got destroyed, out of shape pistons. But that should turn up with the compression check.
