I'm going to try to change the impeller on my 1984 Merc 200, do I need to drain the gearcase oil before I drop the lower unit? Someone told me I need to do that first, but he has an Evinrude so I'm not sure if that applies with my Merc.
Not unless you want to change the oil and the impeller kit should come with screw gaskets also but really the oil should be changed roughly every 30 hrs or every month depending on how you use your boat
The plastic ring (oil seal) on the bottom of the water pump base is worn.
Do I need to replace it? The oil did not have any water in it, though it was real dark when I changed it.
