I have an 88 evinrude 175. Serial #R 08259379 it sat for 3 years before I bought it. So I decided I need to change impeller firs before trying to start it. After a couple of painful hours I managed to get the shift linkage unhooked. Yes it’s in reverse. Now my impeller and key should show up today. Had to order new key cause old one seems warped won’t fit on new impeller. My question is which way do I turn the shaft when twisting the housing down on impeller?

Next I’ll have to put lower unit back on. What’s easiest way to get the linkage hooked back up?

ive changes the impeller in old boat which had a force motor and was easier imo. Any input on this one would help thanks

Don't twist the housing. You would turn the shaft clockwise while lowering the housing straight over the impeller so the vanes on the impeller will be bent in the correct position. As you turn the shaft, the key will turn the impeller. Put a little grease on the inside of the impeller housing to help the impeller turn.

As for the shift linkage, I don't know what linkage you have for sue on that motor, but if it's the one that is split in two pieces connected together with a connector with a side (removable) plate on the motor housing, you would put the top shift rod into the connector & tighten the bolt before putting the LU in place, then insert the bottom shaft into the connector (with the bolt started enough to hold it into the threaded hole where it goes) as you are placing the LU in place. Make sure the bolt on the connector (Top & Bottom) go into the indents on the shift rod. Might need to slightly spread that connector (usually brass?) a bit to make it easier to insert the shift rod into it.
