This is making me crazy. Why does the Suzuki manual say to change the oil every 100 hours and the filter every 200 hours? I am changing the filter and oil every 100 am I wasting money?

You must not be European.....:D

I guess Suzuki is making one heck of a good filter, however, considering what you can order them for, changing them every time can't hurt. Many of us who are comfortable and capable of doing our own work seem to overmaintain our rigs..not a bad idea.

I do all my own service work within what the warrantee will allow. I have the 175's and to get to the filter I have to pull the side pans. On the V6 it is no problem on these motors it takes a bit more time to get all the cables back in place.

So the question remains, Why would they say that?

most all manufactures do that, cars used to as well.
dunno why but if I change the engine oil the oil filter gets changed as well.
over kill maybe but filters are cheap.

Unless it's a ~2000 Honda Civic! LOL Those damn things are almost impossible to get at unless you can stand under the car and reach up. I'll put fresh oil in, but you have to go somewhere else sometime later to replace the oil again and filter. Yes, I'm bitter.

Anyways, if you can get at it, know you can get it off and put a new one on... just do it. I shudder at leaving a dirty filter in when putting nice clean oil in. Couldn't get at the filter of my GF's Civic (hence my bitterness above), replaced the oil and made her go and have it all done over again the next day at a shop. For the amount of dirty oil in the filter, probably not a huge deal leaving it if you're religious about changing when you should but at the same time, cheap insurance.

My F115 Yam has the same recommended maintenance interval, 100 hrs for oil and 200 for filter. Nevertheless, at less than 20 South Pacific Pesos for a filter and easy access for changing there's no way the she's not going to get fresh oil and a new filter every 100 hours! She also gets new plugs and a new fuel/water separator filter at the 100 hour mark. BTW I've been given some Autolite plugs for her... any good?

So we all agree as owners that the oil and filter get changed each time.

But why would they print that in the manual? Has anyone asked this at a Suzuki tech training session / school?

Re: Change oil only 100hrs? Keep old filter 200hrs?

I asked a friend of mine who manufactured oil filters really how long they last and he said,"at least 15,000 miles",probably longer. Think about how little real sludge or oil contamination comes from a modern ultra lean and clean fuel injected 4 stroke motor. Most oil contamination from older engines/motors came from carbed, choked, rich fuel mixtures that turned the oil black in a big hurry. So most of us, myself included, are changing filters mostly for our own satisfaction and maintenance "overkill". I'm going to keep right on doing it because it makes me feel good and I'm sure that makes the filter guys happy! Good Luck!
