I have looked through the link/sink thread, and I have searched in this forum, but haven't seen where it tells me HOW to set the timing. The link/sink thread mentions that the timing needs to be set to 30 deg BTDC, but how do you change the timing.

I am assuming that I will need a standard clip-on timing light hooked to the top plug wire. I also assume that this needs to be done while in the water as the muffs won't provide enough water flow.

Re: change timing

You use an inductive clip on timing light and put the pick-up on the top wire. You can static time to 28 degrees BTDCor dynamic time to 30 degrees.

To dynamic time the engine, have someone run the boat at wide open throttle on the water in forward gear. Prior to this, mark the lines on the flywheel so they are more visible. Point the timing light at the flywheel and see where the scribed lines are. There may be only one or there may be three Middle line is 30 and, of course, the single line is 30. If the line is even with the pointer on the block above the top carb then no adjustment is necessary. If they do not line up, then stop the engine and adjust the link at the top of the timing tower. Opening the gap retards and closing it advances. Adjust in increments until it is correct.

For static timing in the driveway, remove all plugs and ground them so the engine will not start. Again, put the inductive pick-up on #1 wire. Put the engine in forward gaer at wide open throttle. Crank. Timing at cranking speeds should be 28 degrees BTDC.
