I have a 2001 Ocean Pro Johnson and I wanted to upgrade the fuel system. I installed a new sending unit in the tank, new fuel line and bulb, new filter at the engine, new fuel/water seperator filter. Took it to the water and it won't idle. Have to bump the throttle up quite a bit to get it to start. Even after getting the engine running good and plenty of time to clear out, it still cuts off when I pull the throttle back to neutral position. The fuel line I used is the grey epa approved line instead of the black hose. Also when I bought a fuel filter for the engine, it was about 2 times the diameter as the OEM one that was on it. Gas is never even fills the filter half way up... is that normal? This thing was running great when I parked it last fall... now Im ready to hit the ocean and I can't go like this...

With all the parts that you replaced, some dirt or something could have broke loose and got onto the carbs. Your filter sounds normal.

There is an air leak somewhere preventing bulb, filter from getting full. And it sounds like the carbs have some obstruction. Tighten all your lines, connections, get it running, and jam it in gear from high idle on water. It will probably stutter for awhile and then blow out the obstruction and plane.

Don't jam it in gear unless you want to start buying gearcase parts !!

I tried those things, I got it in gear and ran the $#*T for 2 hrs at WOT.. Ran almost 50 gallons of gas throught it. It didnt run perfect, when I tried to get up on plane, she was very sluggish and wasnt like that when I parked it last fall. Admittedly the fuel is a little old. I added a little fresh but no help. I brought it home tonight and hooked it up to a 5 gallon portable tank. Itt still was impossible to start without bumping the throttle half way. As soon as it started, dropped the throttle down and just before idle, it shut off every time. That was fresh gas tool

I'd say when changing the filter some debris got into the line and your carbs are clogged. Lots of good info on here on cleaning carbs, I think theirs even a couple of good you tube vids out there.

Try squirting some premix fuel in the carb throats when it wants to die. This may tell you something.

Ok, watched a watched a video as surrender suggested. Looked like a good idea and he had an ocean pro and similar problems. I used some carb cleaner, took all the jets out and flushed the inside of the carbs good. got some fresh gas and fuel system cleaner and ran a short hose to the engine. Changed all the plugs, 2 of the 6 was not good... one was fouled for sure. Got the engine started and still had to make a little adjustment to the big arm coming up from the shifter linkage to get the rpms up. Idled on the hose for 5 minutes at 1000 rpms. Need to head for some water now to see if I hurt anything else with the adjustments. thanks for the help.

Ok, I took a chance and made a 250 mile trip to the ocean. The worst scenairo happened. I backed the boat in, cranked perfect, backed off the trailer and was idling over to my rented slip about 50 yards away and just as I tried to back in, the engine shuts down and I never got it started long enough to bet in the slip... had to get a tow 50 yards from the boat landing... how embarassing. Ive run the engine off another gas line, put another vacuum stitch on it, changed fuel filters, took all the carbs off and cleaned them. (that video surrender suggested probably destroyed all my carbs, I have already bought a used replacement set just incase all else fails. Ive adjusted all I can including the throttle linkage on the starboard side, top linkage. It will idle just enought to get it in gear now so tomorrow, Im gonna take a chance and head for the deep blue water. All my instincts tells me that my boat is not reliable enough to make this trip but I wanna go fishing... bad. The replacement carbs are probably off a 150 because the throat and butterfly is a little smaller than mine. Can anyone tell me how to crank the engine in gear.... just incase I really need to ... to make it back in?
