Hi,
I just had the lower unit changed on my 1974 115hp Johnson. Also changed the control box and all the linkage seems to be working correctly.
Tried to start the boat up today. It did start for about 2 seconds, then shut down. When I try to fire it up now, there is a low chugging sound, but it wont fire up. Help.
Thanks in advance

Some more info on this.
I only get a neutral spin on the prop when I go from forward to neutral. From Reverse to neutal, there is no spin. Need to go to near full throttle forward to loose the neutral spin on the prop.
Thanks

I am confused with the gear shift issues with a motor that won't run. You may want to clarify.

Could be the lower unit is locking up the motor. Is this an exact replacement for the old one? I agree with DJ. You need to verify spark first if all you did was replace the lower unit. Double check the linkage. The control box is a concern, also... And like SoLittle said, clarify the propblem in more detail. Why did you change the control box? Is the motor turning over at normal speed? Battery fully charged? More info needed....

Thanks all for the help. The issue ended up being a weak battery. We did manage to get out before the day was over.
Just as an FYI, the control box was changed out because the teeth in the mechanism that drives the forward / neutral / reverse broke.
