I have a tapping sound coming from the bellhousing area of my bravo.

The drive taps when all the time whether in gear or not. I replaced the u joints and gimbal bearing because it needed to be done ( there was a growl when turning. ) I pulled the cap of the drive and everything looks new. There is a tap, it is not an exhaust flapper. The middle o ring on the drive shaft was a little flat... So I am going to replace it tomorrow. Any ideas?

i'm with bondo, all i hear is exhaust

but you mention a key piece of evidence in your post about replacing an o-ring on the drive shaft

i hope you didn't reuse the old drive gasket and o-rings??

they are not re-useable - you ALWAYS put a new gasket/o-rings on

the rattling is probably the old flattened o-rings on the shaft allowing the shaft to rattle in the gimbal bearing

Absolutely normal. You will hear gear "backlash" on a Bravo @ idle on a hose! Yes, even full down position.

What is the hammer for?

only if your idle speed is way low, you need a tune-up, or the firing order is wrong on the dist cap

replace the gasket and o-rings, that is your problem

The noise is simply the driven gears vs. the driven gear. Without a load, they make a noise. Put in gear & see what happens.

brand new o rings on the drive shaft today... no change. At this point i thinkit has to be something in the exhaust. The noise takes a moment to start after I start the boat, just like the water coming out of the exhaust. I am going to run the boat today after a cleaning and report.
