I got home from the lake today and decided to check lower unit oil and wouldnt you know...it looked like milk! I just purchased a new prop (used). I wonder if the new prop had something to do with the water in lower unit? I just changed lower unit oil prior to installing new prop. Prop looks brand new and does not vibrate. Any suggestions?

Not the prop..

When you changed the oil did you replace the gaskets on the vent and fill plugs?

Re: Changed props and now water in lower unit??

Hey Trent, I will pick up a couple of gaskets for my drain and vent plugs along with a quart of gear lube tomorrow. I have only used the boat twice since changing oil and oil looks like coffee with a lot of cream. I am wondering how I can pressure test my lower unit. I have a compressor but I do not have a way to accurately regulate pressure (12psi). Any ideas on how to rig a pressure tester.

You dont need a compressor..

You can buy a vacuum/pressure tester at a local autoparts store. You will need to check pressure and vacuum to find the leak along with soap and water spray.

U got that right Chesire! My iwfe has learned to just shake her head in total disbelief anymore :)
And wouldn't you know it? The vent/fill screw gaskets don't come with the the seal kits? No worries tho. They can be purchased for about 2 buks for a pack of 5.

How do you know what the correct amount of pressure is for your lower unit or are they all the same?

10-15psi is enough applied pressure for a leak test. Just pressurize the gear box, shut off the fill valve (or stop pumping) and watch the pressure. It should not drop over time....30 minutes is long enough. The amount of pressure is not important, its whether or not it drops off when left over time. Gear box should be empty of fluid. If leak is evident, pour warm soapy water(dishsoap works good) over suspected areas....output shaft seals, bearing housings, input shaft seals and shift shaft seal.
The vacuum test is just as important. Same idea....apply as high a vacuum as you can get (26-30"HG pending on elevation) and watch the gauge to see if it drops off over time.

Good luck! :)
