changeing lower unit oil

can someone tell me if you can change the lower unit oil with the engine tilted?? or do you have to do it with the engine upright?? i have no way of getting the boat out of the water at the moment and wanted to check the oil.can you do this with the boat beached ? help appreciated

You wouldn't want to change the oil unless the engine was fully tilted down. But, you can remove the fill screw (when its in any position) to see the condition of the gear lube.

Be very careful to not drop the screw (plug) in the drink!
