I have a 1958 evinrude fastwin 18hp, and am trying to remove the lower unit to change the water pump impeller. I unbolted the lower unit, and unbolted the shift rod connector. According to the Seloc manual, all i am supposed to do is slowly work it out. I cannot get any more off than what came down when the bolts were undone.

Am i missing something?

I have worked on it trying to get it loose, but it just doenst seem to be doing anything.

Fergulus.... On the 1958 18hp Evinrude, the following items are what reatains the lower unit.

Inside the plate on the side of the exhaust housing (the housing between the powerhead and the lower unit), there is a brass shift connector that attaches the upper to lower shift rods with two 3/8" slotted hex head bolts. Only one bolt needs to be removed.

There are four (4) small (usually 7/16" hex head bolts and one large (1) usually a 9/16" hex head bolt attaching the lower unit to the exhaust housing.

If you have removed the above items, the only thing holding the lower unit on is friction, salt corrosion, something of that nature. There is nothing more to do except to pry the unit off.

Re: Changing a 1958 18hp impeller

Thanks alot for the feedback.

Even though the manual said that all there was left to do was pry it off, my inexperience with motors (and starting work on anything i am unfamilliar with) took the better of me, and i was afraid i had forgotten something. I didnt want to pry too hard for fear of damaging something.

As a beginner to boating and motors, I'll probably start asking many more questions on this section of the iBoats forum quite a bit.
