Hello everyone, I have twin 2008 250 four stroke Yamahas. How hard is it to change the clear filter on the front of the engine? I did the one on my HPDI's and it was a pain in the neck to get it back on. Do you need a special tool for the newer 250's? Is it a similar procedure to the HPDI's? If I can save some money doing it myself I'd like to. I am fairly mechanical.

Thanks in advance.

Those clear plastic bowl can be tight and hard to unscrew, but you can do it with some large pliers, the bowl is a tough nylon-like plastic and really not all that delicate. After cleaning I always put a drop of oil on the O-ring and threads and screw it in very carefully so not to cross-thread it and screw it up good. After you do it once or twice it gets easier, just like most things. If you have a water/fuel separator type filter mounted on your transom you'll rarely have much water or debris in those clear plastic engine mounted filters, but I feel like they're a great back-up to your big separator filters. Good Luck!

if its like most I do and your using an E fuel, then normally I destroy it coming off and install a new one under warrenty.
they are kinda pricy. about 117 dollars each.
Yamaha is aware of the issue and is trying to resolve it.

need to add.
if you attempt to remove it while its mounted on the engine odds are high you will break the housing or the mounting bracket if your using Ethanol blended fuels.
take it off, turn it upside down, lock the mounting tits in a vice and strap wrench it off.
better yet take it to a trusted Yamaha dealer and let them tear it up. warrenty will cover the cup.
if they break anything else its their nicklel.

Guys, thanks for the advice. Simple as it should be, the E10 fuel really complicates fuel issues and I think I'll stick with plugs, cylinder head anodes, gear oil and motor oil changes, along with main fuel filter changes. I'll leave the rest to my local dealer who has a master technician on staff who really knows his stuff. I put over 500 hours per year on the engine and was told to keep the big Yamaha 10 micron blue filter changed every 100 hours and change the engine mounted clear filter once per year. Seems to do OK.
