Changing from '07 motor to '73 motor....

I have a 17ft grizzly boat that I'm taking the 2007 9.9hp off and putting a 1973 500 50hp motor on the back. I fish a lot of lakes where you have to have a 10hp or less but I plan on hitting some rivers. Just wondering if this motor will take the same hookup or will I need an adapter to make the change happen.

Thanks,
Doug

A little difficult to say with any certainty.

Assuming the 9.9 is a tiller motor but what about the 50? Tiller or remote?

Electrical is completely different. if the small motor was electric start, you may be able to adapt them. The wiring colors will be different. If the Merc 50 has a distributor, you will need to make sure you feed power to the switchbox to make the ignition work. See if you can get a wiring diagram for both motors and make a crossconnect chart.

Check the control cables. If yours have the plastic barrel nut and the plastic end with the 3/16 hole in the very end, they may fit.

Yeah they told me that the throttle cables should work. Also they said that they make an adapter that goes from the 8 pin to the 14 pin like on my boat now. So hopefully this works..

Thanks,

Doug
