I am looking at changing the gear case oil in my 1993 rude 120. I was wondering what steps need to be taken to carry out this procedure properly? what parts need replacing and what is the recommended gear case oil to use? high performance that is.

Also how do you know when it is time to change the gear case oil? will i notice any benefits to using new oil?

thanks guys/gals

Re: Changing Gear Case Oil?

gear case oil should be changed every fall before the first freeze, this gives you an opportunity to see if there is water there,, and get it out before it freezes and crack the lower unit. always, change the seals on the drain and vent plug. use 80-90 outboard gearcase oil. remove the drain plug, and vent plug, while waiting for it to drain. put the new seal on the plugs. the new oil goes into the bottom hole, until it runs out the vent plug, install vent plug, then bottom plug. they make a pump to pump the oil into the bottom hole.

As a side note if your drained oil looks milky white you have a water leak and should get that looked at before you have any larger problems. GL

ps 57johnson, i dont think you caught that one in the niagara river did ya, lol

Are you sure its coming out of the prop exhaust and not leaking down from somewhere else. Id drain you oil, and follow TD's advice from another thread, filling it with kerosene or Diesel fuel, turning the prop a few times by hand, then draining and refilling with new seals on the vent and drain plugs. 100% it is coming from the prop exhaust hole and no leaking down from anywhere. kinda looks like a milky greesy substance... smoky

Re: Changing Gear Case Oil?

Your engine burns a fuel and oil mixture. You have a two stroke engine so not all of the fuel and not all of the oil actually gets burned. A small amount goes out the exhaust. Fuel, oil, and byproducts of combustion when mixed with the cooling water forms a white milky liquid. That's nomal. When you remove the drain screw, clear water will come out first if the engine has not been run in awhile. That's an indication you have water intrusion. If no water comes out but you have a light chocolate milky looking muck coming out, you also have water intrusion but this time the gear lub is holding it in suspension. The gear oil should look much like the stuff you are putting in.
