changing gears...

Okay, I don't have the motor anymore, but this is just killing me to find out...<br /> I used to have a 1978 40 Johnson and I could change the gears to forward and reverse, but if I went for a cruise and then shut it down and did not put it neutral as soon as I turned it off, I could not change gears until it was completely cooled down. What's up with that?

Hello.<br />I had it happen to me with a '69 40 horse johnson.<br />It stopped after I repaired the skeg and refilled the lower unit with oil.<br />I guess there might be other reasons ,but that one was mine.
