changing gimbal ring

hi i have a 1973 mercruiser 1 drive with the trim limit switch on the top of the gimbal ring and i'm looking at replaceing the gimbal ring because it's cracked my question is can i put on a gimbal ring with the trim limit switch on the side if i change the piece that bolts to the outside of the transom

Ayuh,... I believe you'll have to swap out the Complete transom assembley to do that....

even the inner transom plate? and is that a better style setup?

Ayuh, I agree...^^^^^
It will be easier & cheaper to replace the entire transom assembly with a used one of the same vintage....
They turn up on ebay now & then....
Get one that is from the midwest or Great Lakes that has only been run in the sweet water....

No, the inner transom plate will still work....
There is no benefit to using the newer style trim switch on your rig....
You should be able to tell by ear & gauge where your drive is at....
The switch in the upper only kills the trim pump in the trailer position....

If you don't have anyone local, you may check for "Ron Bender", I think he is in FL. He welded mine and has a kit for install of some of the later units (mine is a bravo unit) Knows his stuff, good guy to work with, gives you his cell # to call... I would hate to see his cell bill
