I have a volvo penta aq125a with a 270 outdrive.I changed a leaking bellows and now will try to change the gimble, and seals. Not sure what to do.Whats the procedure to get the seal and bearing out?
I think you should be able to remove the PDS and bearings without removing the motor??
The top of drive needs to come off. Then a snap ring and seal then the bearing.
The 4cyl. has 1 bearing and the 8cyl has 2.
Most of the bigger motors have 2 bearings that require a motor extraction.
It is way easier to work on with the motor out.
You sure the bearing needs replacing?
Take the top of the drive off and reach in and see if the shaft moves.
ANY side to side movement?
There is a grease fitting or a grease cup to help with lubing.
Any rust/ corrosion on the u-joints or the front yoke??
Excess play or slop with the u-joints, replace.
Ya there is some slope in the shaft. the seal looks destroyed and I am sure the bearing is also. Prior to this I had a loud rumbling noise and a big vibration. I really hope I don't have to pull engine out so I am going to try and remove bearing. Do I have to have a special tool to get bearing out.
Ya,I guess I should do it right.I dont know where to start on pulling the engine. What needs to be unbolted on the back of the engine?I dont know much about boats, what is the flex plate and what does it do?
The flex plate is where the drive shaft inserts into. It almost looks like a clutch plate because it has damper springs. We had one that had a crack in it and we were chasing down a vibration problem forever until we found it.
You need to support the motor to start the process.
I'm luck I have a BIG Sycamore tree in my yard.
It's held in place by the transom.
It has 6 bolts screwing into the transom assy.
Get a parts diagram and look at the parts and how they go together.
Ive been looking at all kinds of pic's and digrams. Not sure which way to take this thing out.Should I unbolt at the fliy wheel cover and lift it out or do I unbolt the bolts that go through the transom shield?
