Changing in-tank fuel filter

This is just a general question not necessarily pertaining specifically to Johnson and Evinrudes.

My boat has a below deck fuel tank. Its 20 years old and I would like to change/clean the wire mesh filter that covers the pick-up inside the fuel tank. However, the fuel pick-up is welded to the tank. Question: How do I go about changing the filter?

Thanks guys.

You are, sort of, in the wrong area. But, in tank fuel "socks" are pretty porous. Unless that you see an obvious issue, leave it alone.

If anything, apply air pressure backwards through the outlet and then flush the tank.

Thanks for the reply, I didn't think about blowing air back into it. That wouldn't put air in the fuel line at all would it?

The reason I ask is I'm having some fuel delivery issues (starving for gas at high RPM's). I am fairly confident it is the fuel pump and have already ordered a rebuild kit. But since I am working on that I am also checking over everything else fuel related.

If your tank is giving you fits it is most likely the "anti siphon valve" on the OUTLET. Those can stick and cause all kinds of starvation issues.

Thanks for your help DJ. I'm sure you've got better things to do than give me advice all day, but is there an easy way to check if that would be causing any problems?

There actually is::)

1. Run off of a known good remote tank.

2. Eliminate, for testing only, the anti siphon valve. It's all hardware store parts. Maybe-$6:00.

Remove the AS valve and replace with an ordinary straight 90 degree 3/8" (ID) fitting.

Sounds good. Once the fuel pump kit arrives I will slap that on and test it to see if that was the problem. If it doesn't change anything I'll be taking a look at the a-s valve.

Much appreciated
