changing long shaft to short shaft

i just bought an "85" mariner 28 hp outboard (664 l452543) long shaft and was wondering what would be required to turn it into a short shaft?the motor only has 5 hours on it so its worth putting money into. i would like to be able to use my 9.9 at times so a jackplate isnt possible is it?also any idea where i could get the parts? thank you.

If I may suggest that you try it as is before you go through the expense of shortening it. I run a long shaft 9.9 on a short shaft transom with no problem. Yes it violates the "rules" but it works for me.

i would but i fish the wabash river and would hate to lose the lower unit. ive run aground with the 9.9
