Changing lower unit gear oil on 2009 Etec Motor.

I want to re-power my boat with a 150 E-tec motor. Gathering information, Evinrude claims there's no service or maintenance for three years. I would like to change the gear oil every year too make sure there's no water in the lower unit. Is changing the gear oil the same as any other lower unit? Presently, I have an older Johnson outboard, which I change the gear oil myself. I rather not take it to a dealer to do this simple job.

Same process. Remove the vent and fill plugs to drain. Fill from the bottom until juice comes out the vent. Insert the VENT plug first, then quickly insert the DRAIN plug.

I also could not accept the thought that I could run the lower unit lube for 3 years. So, I changed it out after break in- like I have every other new outboard I have bought after I broke it in. I will also change it at the end of the season and annually thereafter.

I am always surpised how many filings are on the drain plug magnet. I cannot imagine allowing a lower unit to go 3 seasons.

I love my E-tec, but this service interval seems silly....

Be sure to use the E-TEC rated gear oils in your new motor.

The two approved for the extended 3yr-300 hour service are the Evinrude HPF-XR and the HPF-Pro

These special oils are why there is an extended oil change interval.

It is still a good idea to check a few times a season for fishing line around the prop and for the proper oil level and condition in the gearcase.

Thanks for the information everyone. I've own outboards and I/O's and at the end of every season, I always changed the gear oil. I had the same opinion, three years is a long time for gear oil.
