I'm going to change the lower unit oil in my 1977 85hp Evinrude (the Previous owner says he changed it, but I want to make certain). My question is: What position should the motor be in to do this? I have it sitting in the "running" position right now, but it has the "tilt" and "Towing" positions.

Thanks for any other info/advice.

Joe

I have an older engine, it wants to be up as there is a cavity in the skeg. not certain about yours though.

For draining it should be down with the drain hole as low as possible which usually means a bit of a slant. The motor has to be straight down with the antiventilation plate level for filling. Fill from the bottom til it comes out the top.
