changing lower unit on 1959 10 horse evinrude

hi everybody.my 1959 10 horse evinrude keeps popping out of gear.i was at a swap meet today and bought another motor for parts.the guy said it was a 10 horse johnson but when i got it home and checked the model number it's a 1962 5.5 johnson.am i able to swap lower units or just the gears.the bottom ends look the same except for where the prop goes on the end looks different.
