Changing Manual Trim Setting

Is changing the manual trim setting on a 1986 40 hp Evinrude something that can be done from the back of a pontoon boat?<br />Would it make more sense to just get in the water and get it done? I can very easily have the motor in 3' of water or less.<br />Also, does the trim pin (or pins) remove completely or just move enough to reset it in another hole? I would just go look, but the boat is 80 miles away right now.<br /><br />Charles

Charles,If you are speaking of the tilt bracket rod ,you should be able to manually tilt motor up into the lock position on water and negotiate the removal of pin and place into desired hole.It will need to be pulled out completely to reinsert.There is a locking flap on one end of rod that needs to be flipped in line with the rod to remove.

ob:<br />That's the info I was looking for. In my original post I referred to the rod that adjusts the trim as "tilt" pin, rather than trim. I have since edited the original post. I had seen the locking flap, but the motor was not tilted up at the time and I wasn't sure how it removed. I always seem to think about these things when I'm nowhere near the lake. Thankfully, you people have the patience to straighten me out periodically.<br /><br />Thanks again. <br />Charles

If you're gonna be changing the pin with the boat in deeper water, drill a small hole in the short section (the part that doesn't hold the engine) and run a small cable or heavy piece of string through it and secure the other end to the engine so when you drop it, you won't have to drive for it. Hooty:<br />LOL<br />I'll bet someone you know had that happen, right?<br />Last week someone I know dropped a ratchet wrench and socket in 4' of water. I could see it and was able to snag it with a garden rake and retrieve it. Very good advice for me since I seem to be dropping stuff constantly recently.<br />What was the old saying, "The hurrier I go, the behinder I get". That's been me.<br /><br />Charles
