hi all, nebie here just bought a 1989 vip vision 17ft with stern diver motor. its seems that it is a 4cyl with cobra outdrive. i'm curious as to weather or not you can put a different motor in there and have it hook up to the outdrive unit or do you have to replace the everything as one unit. any information would truly be appricated.

The transom shields are the same, but you will need a different exhaust tube, and different outdrives for different engines. The 3.0L(4cylinder) engine you have has a smaller gear case, than the V6 & V8 engines, along with different gear ratios. Then the larger engines have a different motor mount setup. Side mounts not front.
Basically, if you want more engine, buy a boat with more engine.

Should work fine, once you learn how to use it, get it tuned up, learn to trim it properly, and find out how it all works.
Lots of boats out there pulling skiers and tubes with those engines.
