I looked at the manual and it says I need to fill the gear oil from the bottom to prevent air pockets. Never done this before...

Place a tray under the motor, drain oil....easy...

...but how do I fill it from the bottom? without it just leaking out.

Sorry for the "new guy" question, but again, we all start somewhere.

thanks for any advice

Purchase the threaded adaptor that will screw into the lower unit bottom plug. (Wal-Mart has them) Remove top & bottom plugs. Let old oil drain out. Screw adapter into bottom port. Fill with fresh oil until it runs out of the top hole. Install plug in top port. Remove fill adaptor from bottom port and quickly install bottom plug. Shouldn't lose much more than a few drops. Also a good idea to replace both o-rings or seals on both plugs to prevent water contamination.

If changing tail oil for first time after break in period or having excesive hours use, that is, very dirty or with small metal fillings a good idea would be to squirt some new oil with bottle noozle or adapter on upper hole, rotate prop with hand, drain it out untill removing completely oil leftovers of the prevous refill. Follow fill steps as indicated.
