Changing power drives

Hello, I have a 1979 Wellcraft that is in perfect shape. It has twin 470s and one will need head work before long. I am thinking about pulling these two engines out and installing either 2 200hp outboards, or my favorite idea, a new jet drive with an 8.1 efi. Anyone with advice or knowledge about this switch, I would really appreciate your input. Thanks now for any advice.

Re: Changing power drives

The 470 uses a Ford 460 big block head, so if the head is totally shot, that should tell you that you can fix that problem easily. If it were me, I would just fix the 470 and be done with it, otherwise for outboards you will need to replace the transom and tie it into the floor structure to transfer forces, Inboards transfer force through the structure they are mounted to, the transom isn't as strong as an outboard boat so you have to modify it for the stress and weight of two outboards. Its not impossible at all. The jetdrive would be fun, but you would have to rebuild the transom for the single lower mounted jet drive, cut a hole in the bottom for the intake and hope the keel shape is close enough to the intake shape, you would have to rebuild the engine mounting structure as well. None of it is impossible, but the easiest and cheapest is to fix that 470. At 170 hp apiece, they aren't that bad a motor, but parts can be spendy (I just got done fixing one for a friend).

Hello JasonJ, I have seen your input on here a lot of times. You do know what you're talking about. My idea was if I sold all the 470 items, I would have a tidy sum to put toward the new Jet Drive. The Jet would be a lot less maintenance if I did it right with SS impellers and a loader impeller. I still respect your input, would you do the Jet? I am not worried about the work, this probably will be my last project, I want it to be as much fun done as it is doing it.

If you want it bad enough, you can do the jet. Do you have a complete jet drive with motor lined up? In my mind, having a complete setup would be the way to go. Don't want to cobble too much together.
