Hi everyone. I'm trying to replace my old ss prop with a newer mercury tempest plus. The tempest came off of a yamaha and I'm trying to put it on my johnson. The problem is the hub sleeve wont go far enough down the shaft to tighten the prop. Any advice?

The yamaha is a 96' pro v 150hp and the johnson is a 85' v4 140hp.

With some limited research I couldn't make the numbers match.
Perhaps I missed something.

I did a little research. Would it be that I need a hub kit for a johnson?

Could it be that the V-6 has a larger gear case than the V-4?

Perhaps you have a prop that fits a 4-3/4" gear case and you are trying to put it on a 4-1/4" gear case?

The 85 140 should have the 15 spline 4.75" gearcase. We'll assume it does since you say the prop will slide on but the hub depth is wrong. If it is a new style square bore prop that uses an interchangable hub system then just get an OMC / Evinrude / Johnson 15 spline hub kit.

How can I tell if it's square bore? In the kit I see that square sleeve, but on my prop its just a circular hole.

Is this the kit you have? hubkit_0.png

If so the square sleeve fits into the prop from the back side. It should slide almost completely in with very little effort. The hole may look somewhat circular but trust me it's more rounded square.

Yeah, that's it. So the old square sleeve should slide out the back? I'll give it a try.

Yeah you should be able to tap it out. I usually take the metal insert that goes into the plastic sleeve and turn it to where I can use the keys on it to catch on the sleeve and tap on it with a hammer. It will pop right out like this.
