Changing prop shaft... alpha one gen one

I had a thread that stripped when snugging down the prop nut. I know that the shaft replacement is usually a deal breaker and costs more than a sei lower. But I did a little thinking outside the box... local marine repair had a good used shaft for $75. I took them just the lower half and he did the repairs. I reinstalled the lower myself and filled with lube, etc. Long story short... total repair bill, less than $300. Thought that was pretty damn reasonable. Happy boating!

sounds like ya did good 90stingray. about half price of new (aftermarket). no warranty, but ya still got a mercruiser, not an sei. i'm with ya...

i did something similar last winter. took my upper in for brg. replacement. had them (dealer) do it due to lack of tools on my part. so far, it's worked out well. hope yours does too..

do ya have a relationship with your dealer? i 'think' i do... imho, this helps when i take the pieces to repair instead of them doing the whole shebang, which is what i think they'd (the dealer) like to do....

out of curiosity, did ya pressure test prior to reinstalling the drive? i like to do this every time i split the halves. especially if i work (disassemble) on either the upper or lower.. so far so good..

Glad your repair worked out for ya and Happy Boating back at ya...:)

Re: Changing prop shaft... alpha one gen one

This was the first time I had been to this particular repair facility. I went down and explained what I wanted... basically as least as expensive as possible. And I also noted that I am able to do some of the work. So we worked out a plan. He's just a good ol boy. Works fast too. Damaged it Wednesday afternoon, talked about it wed night. Took him the lower Thursday at lunch and he called Thursday evening to come and get it. Ready for boating by the weekend.

But I will agree with you Ziggy, most shops want to take it all the way. And not let a customer do some of the work. Its like their way to stick it to someone since they have all the special tools. And I am glad to still have my original mercruiser lower. I even get to keep my old shaft... or my new oversized punch :)
