I have an 83 Evinrude 50hp with what I think is the original prop. I was given a Michigan Wheel prop and was wanting to try it.

What do I need to do to switch props? Is it as simple as taking the old one off and putting the other one on?

Re: Changing Prop

Yep. Good time to smear some marine grease on the shaft, and use a NEW (STAINLESS STEEL) cotter pin.

And...there is a large thrust washer forward of the propeller. It sometimes sticks in the old prop. Make sure you retrieve it and put it on the shaft before sliding the new prop on. Failure to do so will cause extreme damage to the lower unit gearcase.

Thanks!

I've learned that things tend to not be as easy as they seem! I'm glad this one is!

Is there anything I should be looking for on the thrust washer? Ie, do they ever need routine replacement?

Only if you drop it in 10 feet of muddy water.

LOL! Speaking from experience?!?

Thanks for the help. I love this forum! I've learned so much about my outboard and have been able to do my own repairs thanks to this forum and the great people here.

One last question: how tight should the nut be?

Re: Changing Prop

If it has a plastic washer under it, 10 - 12 ft lbs.

Mine has a metal thrust washer but a plastic spacer between the prop and nut.

Looks like I need to tighten mine. I put it on with my fingers and lined up the cotter pin holes.(that's how the old one was) There is just a bit of play in the prop.

Re: Changing Prop

Torque it to 12 ft lbs and then back it off to align the nut for the cotter pin.
