I have a 1960 Sea King 5hp deluxe. I'm planning to change the shift dog to fix a jerking feeling that happens occasionally when running at higher rpms. Can I get to the thing by removing the very bottome part of the gear case? (there is a bolted seam right along the prop shaft held on by four screws) My maunual gives instructions for removing the entire gear case which includes taking off the power head, exhaust tube etc. Is it generally a bad idea to turn the shift dog around (so that the revervse side is contacting the forward gear) instead of replacing it. Also are there some seals that I should replace regardless of condition as long as I'm in there.

Hi kdc<br /> For a proper job, yes you should do as the manual says. The water pump empeller probably needs to be serviced anyway. Also the O-ring that seals the shift rod is probably hardend and is on it's way out. If this motor is in halfway good shape I would go to the trouble and do it right. Your motor most likely needs attention to the ignition as well. Those old magnito coil tend to swell and crack over time. Take your time, service the entire unit, get to know it like a freind and you will get many enjoyable hours out of it. If it's a pice-o-junk flip it over stand it on recoil starter, remove those screws, knock the bottom half the L/U off swap the clutch dog, glue and screw the thing back together and go.
