changing spark plugs on a 4.3 merc

On my 4.3 merc does anyone have a trick on getting at the middle plug with out pulling off the manifold? <br />I winterized her today but didn't pull the plugs to shoot oil in the cyl's.<br />Any advice would help!<br /> <br />Link!

If you just put the fogging oil into the carb till the engine is really smoking a lot, you don't really need to put the fogging oil into the cylinders.<br />You can grind a spark plug socket down as shown in my quicky drawing below.<br /><br />

Link, First off, I agree with Don, just fog it well and skip pulling the plugs.<br /><br />Now, I have changed the plugs on my 4.3LX Mercruiser several times without using any special plug wrench. I did not have any issue with the exhaust manifold. Do you have a standard center riser manifold?

There were some of the older manifolds that could be a real pain to get the plugs out. 99% of them are fine, a few are real tight. If you happen to be using Champion plugs (god forbid) they are longer and makes the problem worse. Use a Bosch or NGK that is shorter, and a better plug.

The "ground down" spark plug socket lives in my toolbox as well. Even on some of the V-8's I've had to use it.

I ground down a socket yesterday at work at 3 am and was looking foward to see if this worked BUT<br /> @ 3:30 pm I broke my DA#N foot stepping on a 4" rock twisting my foot, tearing ligaments and ruptureing blood vessles. I so glad I fogged her good I'll change the plugs in spring It's an 2003 4.3. <br /> thanks for all your help,<br /> LINK 2052

Link,<br />sorry to hear bout the busted leg... been there, its no fun... Does your 4.3L have an oil filter? I can't find mine.. on my 2004 4.3L with Alpha 1...?
