anyone done this? the parts are cheap but getting underneath the mower doesn't look fun. the steering wheel pretty much spins in either direction but the gear will catch occasionally. need the texas drought to come back and stop making the grass grow.

New John Deere Steering Sector and Pinion Gear L Series Sabre Scotts | eBay

is this a DIY or should i call in the repair crew? do i even have it diagnosed correctly?

thx

edit- after further review, it's definitely the gear in the link above that's stripped. it does not look easy to get to.

Deere likes to cram stuff under stuff and while I have done a steering assembly R&R on a Craftsmen which logically should be similar but it was a PIA, I would recommend taking it in. Deere's rates for repair are pretty reasonable and with how buried that thing likely is, no way I would try it.. I took my LX188 in for a broken throttle lever. The lever was only accessable by removing the dash tower and unplugging the circuit boards hooked to the key switch.. They knew exactly what to do and it was done in 30 mins. They also only charged for 1/2hr of shop time.
