I have a 3.7 mercruiser Alpha One, I'm new to doing all the oil changes myself....anyway I have read about how to change the oil in the drive, but I am assuming that I need a pump to replace the drive that has been taken out. I want to make sure I am going to have all the right pumps/tools before I start this, this weekend. The boat stay's in the garage for the winter and it doesn't even come close to freezing, but I still want to make sure everything is done right. Thanks for any response!

Re: Changing the oil in the outdrives

you just need the hand pump top that screws straight on to the Mercruiser Gear-lube available from wherever you got/get the oil.

follow the instructions in the user manual and away you go.

one smal tip is to keep a note of the volume of oil you are pumping in so that if you start to get it overflowing from the top before youhave pumped the roughly the right amount in you know not to give up at that point (and end up with a drive full of air!)

also see this post re washers for the 2 plugs alpha drive vent washer question

What's the cost roughly I should be looking at paying for the pump?

Anywhere from 15-25 bucks. I bought mine for 15, but I have seen them cost more. You don't need anything fancy.

As a side note, it is a good idea to replace the washers on the vent and fill plug while you are changing the lube. Remember , that 50 cent washer is keeping water out of your $3000 drive.
