I usually have the shop change the oil, but this year I have decided to get brave and do it myself. I have a mercruiser 3.7 liter, well low and behold, it's not near as easy as I thought....my thinking was it would just be a little harder than changing the truck oil. Well the plug doesn't seem to be near as drainable or accessible. OK so I am assumming I need a pump to do this???? Can someone give me a heads up on how to best do this without taking it to someone. Thanks in advance!

i havent worked on a 3.7 but you should be able to pump out the oil from the dipstick most marine motors are made this way

i bought a mr goodpump at and auto store any thing that has a suction hose that fits over your dipstick should work

it helps to have some trays to catch the drips when you remove the oil filter much easery than cleaning the bilge afterwards

tommays

Get yourself a needle point hoop.... found in the craft section of Walmart or any fabric store.
Then take a couple of those pesky plastic shopping bags and fold over the top of the inner hoop and clamped in place with the outer hoop. Place under your oil filter... will catch the drippings in the bag and provide a saftey net incase slippery hands drop the filter.

Look HERE in case you don't know what kind of hoop I'm talking about.

There are also manual dipstick pumps that work quite well. One I've used & seen others recommend is the Tempo Oil Boy. Costs more ($50-$60), but holds like 6 quarts, 3 hose diameters, works easily & well, and not much that can go wrong with it. Just another option...

I had that little motorized pump and I thought it stunk!!Bought a "Topsider " vacuum pump which could not be easier and works great.Hose goes down the dipstick and you pump up the holding cannister like a bicycle pump about 25 times .Go away and do something else and when you come back, its done.I usually pour in a quart of cheap oil when it is done and suck out that too just to be sure all the dirty oil has gone down to the pan.Charlie

They do work great. Just don't use them for gas. Hardens the seals..
