Hey All,
I need some assistance. I have a 1986 Sport Craft with a 170 h.p., 4cyl, 2bbl. (3.7L) Mericruiser Enigine.
I checked the oil the other day and I noticed that is was blacker than black. So I would like to change both the oil and the filter. It does not show me how to do this in The Seloc Stern Drives Manual 1964 -91. It only shows me How to read the dipstick, Recommends what type of oil to use, how many quarts is needed and the number of the filter I need to use.
Nowhere's in the Manual does it show me :
Where the Oil Drain Plug is:
Where The Oil Pan is located:
How To Change The Oil,etc.
Can some somebody PLEASE advise if possible how to change the oil? Thank you so much. Zbishka

The oil is sucked out of the dip stick tube after the engine is warmed up.
I would recommend you find a marine shop that will take the time to show you how to do it while watching them the first time.
Also you should change your oil at the end of the season every year as part of winterization.

Re: Changing the oil ?

zbishka,
On a 470 the oil pan is at the bottom of the engine. If you can get to it the drain plug in the pan is about mid way back of the engine on the right side. The oil filter is also on the right side of the engine just below the intake manifold about 1/3 way back of the engine. If you can get to the drain plug and the plug will come out, do not strip it, that is the best way to change the oil but is generally very messy. If you are going to pump the oil out thru the dipstick, then you will need a pump like this: http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wc...toreNum=50366&subdeptNum=50396&classNum=50402

Replacement filter is a Fram PH5 (has a new number now???)
If you can find it, straight 40w oil is recommended (at auto parts stores you usually have to ask for 40w) if you cannot find 40w then use 20w x 40w

Hope this helps,

Larry

Depending on the amount of room that you have under your engine, there is a replacement plug with drain hose after market that you replace the drain plug on your engine the first time you change the oi. After that, you just run the drain line out the rear drain hole while at home and let the oil run into a collection bucket. Any automotive store has oil dump stations you can use for free.
This is a very easy way to change the oil BUT, if you do not want to try this, the above methods work great. I feel that it is just difficult to get ALL the old oil out. Probably won't hurt if you leave 1/2 qt or so but I liked to get it all out.
My Old '05 SeaRay 220 came from the factory with one installed. Great idea!!
