You must be refering to the thin rectangular box that is below the exhaust plate. :(

This is hard to explain without a picture. I have done it many times without pulling the block off.

In your manual I am sure it describes how to remove the power head. Look for the part where it will expose the block retaining nuts or lag bolts. You need to remove that small cover, both front and back. Next remove the bolts that connect the lower cowling to the block.

By doing this you should have enough room to pull down on the back of the cowling and remove the bolts that hold the T-stat cover in place.

TMD

Yes it is a box that sits square in the centre at the rear of the engine almost shaded by the block I just looked up what you spoke of in my manual and think I can see where It can be done without separating the block gasket.... I think, thanks for the advice, will see how I go. Even125

Sounds like Clymer's might be generalizing your V4 with some later ones. The thermo cover on the 1969-72 V4s is a lot easier than the later models.

I use a 1/4" drive socket with a universal and a long extention, by long I mean 12-18". Once you get it out it can be a bit of a bear to get back together and get the bolts started. Mine are 87s so may be a bit dirfferent. I use rubber bands to hold it together until I get the bolts started then cut the rubber bands. On mine the pressure releif valves are next to the tstats & shold also be replaced.

Yeah that must be it, ledgefinder I feel like sticking my little finger up the left nostrel of the guy who edited this Clymer manual and lead him around over bumpy ground for a while. :D Some sections have no reference that I can find to my engine. Just gotta wait for my disgust to clear a bit before I pick it up again.
SoLittle if ledgefinder says the 71 is easier than the later ones like yours and you have done it, then I guess it is now out of the too hard basket. Thanks for the extra tip on the relief valves I will do them also. Thanks for your help guys, much appreciated.even125

even125 If you are interested in getting a factory shop and parts manuals go here:

http://www.theoutboardwizard.bizhosting.com/parts_service_and_owners_manuals.html

I don't think much of either the Clymer or Soltec manuals. The factory manuals pay for themselves in the first repair or maintenance.

I have been following this forum for a while and am continually amazed at folks who paid good money for their machinery yet hesitate to get the shop manual. Then they come here hoping someone will lead them step by step through the solution to their problem.
