Changing through hull exhaust back to below water

Recently purchased a '98 Ebbtide with through hull exhaust. Sounds really good trolling around the boat ramps, but gets loud really fast when you open it up. I'm thinking about swapping it back to original. Problem is when whoever converted it they took the Y off and I don't have it. The local boat mech. is going to charge me $2000 to do this, seems a bit steep. I'm guessing the engine will have to be pulled to get to the foot to install a new exhaust Y and I am capable a doing this myself. Anything else I should plan on replacing while I have the engine out. Also I found several used Y's on eBay is there anything I should check out on these that might need to be replaced or is it just an exhaust pipe? I will probably put in a captains call unit since the holes are already in the hull. Any suggestions or opinions would be helpful thanks.

Have you considered just adding mufflers? There are some that are pretty good (and some that don't muffle anything, except your wallet).

Haven't checked on mufflers. How well do they work and what brands would you recommend? Also even with a "good" muffler how would it compare with going back original?

I installed Corsa thru hull exhaust, captains call diverters and muffler tips; and mine is a big block, and even with muffs it's still pretty loud. If yours is a small block it will be better but you will still want the diverters or go back original.

How much room do you have for muffs? basically, how long is the straight shot for the pipes? I have two fiberglass/rubber mufflers I took off my century that may be available...
