Changing to a power tilt/trim

I picked up a used 85hp motor with tilt/trim on it and I want to change it over to my motor of the same hp and vintage. Is there a trick to separating the motor from the unit? I removed the keeper with the 4 bolts at the bottom but I don't see anything holding it to the motor. On top of the shaft there appears to be a washer with some sort of rubber seal. Can I just pound that out or is there something locking the shaft in position?

Re: Changing to a power tilt/trim

It really would help to know the year and model engine. It sounds like you are talking about removing the kingpin on a pre-Mercury Force. This is OK if you can handle the engines without mounting clamps. If you look inside the lower engine pan, just behind the air intake and below the carb is the top of the kingpin. You just drive it out. But it aint that simple--you know that! There are some interference points and usually you need to fuss and fight with it. And, if the steering is tight because of corrosion, it will fight you all the way. It is really simpler (provided that corrosion has not jammed the tilt cylinder top bar) to remove the tilt pin and the top mounting bar for the tilt cylinder and shock cylinder. then just swap the whole engine clamp/tilt/trim assembly.

Re: Changing to a power tilt/trim

Thanks for the input Frank. It is a 1984 Force 85 hp. I suspected that they were all pretty much the same. Your suggestion to change my approach has merit since if I need to hammer it out I would have to strip the engine down again:eek:. I wasnt sure if the bracket on the manual tilt was identical to the power unit. It's too bad I didn't find the parts engine sooner;).
