Lubedude :)
Excellent web site!!!!
Have 2003 chevy truck & a 2002 car been using regular motor oil, 5/30 detergent. Would I need to use a higher number synthetic like 10/30 ???
Can I switch to Synthetic ???
Will the seals/gaskets weep or leak???
I've heard that by switching one way or the other that this could be a problem.

Thank You!!! ;)

Re: Changing to Synthetic

Synthetics used to be bad news for seals in some cars, Fly Rod, but those days are long gone.

I have used nothing in my vehicles except Mobil 1 for about 20 years. My Mercedes MLs have required synthetic only, period.

Says something for the benefits of synthetics.

Go for it. :)

Re: Changing to Synthetic

don't mean to hijack a post, but oh well....

i wanted to ask this in the other hundred synthetic posts, but it would have got lost in the arguments.

i just emptied my entire oil reservoir for my '98 johnson 150hp, and filled it with penzoil premium blend.

1. is this full synthetic? what's the difference?
2. see any problems with this? assumed i could use synthetic with vro.

thanks-

Re: Changing to Synthetic

Fly Rod:

JB answered the oil leak issue well, If you have a gasket leak now, you will have one with the synthetic and It could get slightly worse due to the creeping action of the synthetics. Not really a concern unless its a bad leak already. Synthetics actually have an ability to soften seals due to the esters in them.

mattttt25: The oil you selected is not a full synthetic, thats why its called a "blend", Hard to say how much synthetic it has. Its better Than a standard TCW-3 oil though and will be fine in your injection system. Several use this oil on the forum and they all seem to like it. Why not step up to the full synthetic next time around?

Re: Changing to Synthetic

Lubedude, I didnt check on your site, but has there been any data showing that synthetics will make your engine (car, boat, anything) last longer?

I am not a skeptic, I used to run synthetic in my Camaro, but I would like to see this data if there is any?

Ken

Well, I could give you some, but it would be concidered bias or more hype, etc.

Here is the real deal. How long do you, or anyone usually keep a car? Three, maybe five years? Ya, some of use keep our cars forever, but it is not the norm. A good quality oil, changed regularly every 3,000 or so miles will go for 2-300,000 miles. Great huh? But the performance of those cars will gradually suffer and normally they will start to use more oil. So if you traded it off before that, then not to worry.

Reasons to use a synthetic:

You figure you are going to keep it forever, maybe ten years or so, or maybe you plan on handing it down eventually. If there are 150,000 miles on it when you do hand it down, there will be almost no wear inside the engine at all, Of course there will be some, but it will be very minor provided everthing was taken care of alone the way.

If its a high performance car, or the manufacturer requires it!

You would like to go a bit farther before you change your oil. Most synthetics of today would have very little trouble going 7,500 miles between changes. With Proper filtration, (a bypass filter)and the right oil you wouldnt even have to change it at all given that you follow up once a year with an oil analysis.

Towing very heavey loads in high heat aplications. Synthetic thrive in high temps where regular oils deteriorate rapidly.

Inboard type boats benifit greatly with synthetics and can go nearly twice as long between changes.

There is at least one more reason to run a synthetic, Fuel milage, youre not going to set any records for gas milage, but you can figure on a 1-2% increase in Gas milage, That can really add up with todays fuel costs over say 5 years.

I hope Ive shed some light, Dont ask me to prove it, cause the tests have been done by lots of different places for years and I havnt stated anything that hasnt been out there for years.

I know this really didnt answer your guestion, Go ahead and look on my site, even though its an Amsoil site, you can see by the different tests that the other synthetics do better than regular oils, Also, you might visit, Oil Info

Re: Changing to Synthetic

You answered my question perfectly.

In essence you said a normal car driver will see no longevity improvement.

Those with special applications (high heat/high stress) will. Boats, high performance engines, towing, etc.

Thanks,

Ken

Au contrare Kenimpzoom. Lubedude said the opposite.

However, the engine wont blow up (like in the Castrol commercial)

Your definition is: the car still runs like new

If that is the case, then yes, I did misinterpret your writings. Sorry for the confusion.

Ken

Re: Changing to Synthetic

Hi there,
I put synthetic in my wifes car when it had 6k on the ticker. It is coming up on 300k and that honda still starts runs and drives like new. No rattles knocks at start up nothin! She drives like a mad man also and the car still sees red line (7800rpm) when getting on the freeway ect. Maybe We just got lucky but every 60K when it's time for a new timing belt and water pump I am able to see what the inside of the motor looks like and it still looks like new. I change the oil at 7500 mile intervals.
All of our other cars we have bought used and then switched to synthetic. everything seems to be working well with the other cars.
I could just be lucky But I think the oil has something to do with it.

Re: Changing to Synthetic

I guess, if you like to change your oil every 3000 miles(Some people like to change there oil), and figure on selling it at around 75,000-100,000 miles and dont care about the fuel savings then you are just one happy camper. Drive on! :D

75,000 miles with regular 3000 mile oil changes is 25 oil changes. $1.29 a quart X 5 = 6.45 + a filter at about $5.00 is $11.45 X 25= $286.25 for regular oil over that period of time.

75,000 miles with synthetics changed at 7500 miles = 10 changes. $4.00 a quart (onsale) X 5 = $20.00 X a filter, about $5.00 = $25.00 X 10 = $250.00
So, for Less than conventional oil over the time you owned your car you had better wear and a little better fuel economy, and the next person that gets your car is really going to appriciate it.

Now some cars are known to be sludge monsters and you would be better off changing at 5,000 miles, but you can still extend you interval some!

Its a personal call and know one is going to fault you for whatever decision you make.
