Ok I just checked on line to price the trim guage sending unit for my Mercruiser Alpha 1 gen11 outdrive and realised that it could cost a lot more than i expected. the unit itself is reasonably cheap even though u have to buy the 2. however what it takes to change it out could be a mamoth task. I could bet that it cost way more than the price of the part to pay to have it replaced.

NOTE: since i bought this as a used boat and i am not sure of the age or condition of gimbal bearing, drive coupler etc except that they work now. and these items have to be shipped from overseas to me if i need them. I have a Scheduled shut down planned when i plan to have new bearings cable bellows etc in place. when i plan to take down the drive and change out all these parts as a matter of course so that i could do preventative maintainence from a known condition.

So tell me if i sound totally crazy.

with the trim guage sender gone I would expect the limiter sender to fail soon after, as both wires look in a bad way. then i will have no trim. :(
Since i have no major fear of drilling holes in the hull of my boat especially when i can do them above the water line, is it possible to install the new senders, route the wires securing them where required extend them (proper sealing etc) and route them through the transom. then connect them to where they need to be connected.
Then when i do strip down the drive etc. I have the option of routing the wires where they are supposed to be. or if they work perfectly where they are, leave them connected that way making them easier to change if required in the future.
Im in Ocean salt water all the time and trim guages are known to fail here regularly, however most i know about are on out boards and people just ignore the failure, where it does not affect the engine.

more experienced people please advise.

Re: Changing trim senders

why bother? i was able to fix my limit switch by splicing wires (has lasted all season so far...), but not my sender switch. if your limit switch fails, you'll lose "trim", but the "trailer" button will still work--you'll still be able to raise your drive. or you can jumper the wires at the limit switch and use the trim button (but it won't be limited). seems like a bad idea to put holes in your hull if you don't need to; i've never heard of someone doing that as an option, though i guess it would work.

Ayuh,... Why bother....
Mine is wired so the switch lifts the drive, regardless where it is in it's stroke...
No trim Limit....

Don't need no stinkin' trim Gauge,.... I use the "Seat of the Pants" gauge...

^^^^ What Bond-o Said ^^^^

I have never had a functional trim limit switch or trim sender.

Thanks guys, I was a bit woried about the trim limiter, not having much outdrive experience. However fro u guys experience I guess i should survive.
Im already acustommed to trimming the boat with out the guage so if the trim fails i just jumper the wires. Thanks
